Recently I was reading and researching about Mr. Tony Robbins who is an American author, entrepreneur, philanthropist and life coach. Robbins is known for his infomercials, seminars, and self-help books including Unlimited Power and Awaken the Giant Within.
What is the best career advice you have ever been given? When Tony Robbins was asked this question, he replied, “Proximity is power” Now why would he say that? As he brilliantly puts it, “If I wanted to make a movie, it would be easy because I have so many clients who are producers, actors, and heads of studios; I’m around them all the time. In fact, they put me in a dozen movies at that time, without my even asking, because I was in their proximity. If I wanted to make a deal at IBM, I would probably make it work, but it would be a lot harder because I’m not in proximity. In order to hit my financial goals, I got in proximity with investment bankers. Two years later, I made a deal that was worth $400 million!”
Most people get career advice wrong. They think it has to do with learning the perfect skill or finding the perfect company. They might even think that it has to do with finding the one thing you are “passionate” about. Most people say it has to do with working harder than everyone around you. While those things are all important, they all fall short as it eventually all comes down to one and only one thing. Building a Powerful Network.
A recent study has showed that about 85% and above job openings are filled through networking.
